ASCENSION DAY

Ascension Day is one of the great festivals of the Christian year, celebrated 40 days after Easter. It marks the moment when the risen Jesus, having spent time with his disciples after the resurrection, ascended into heaven in their sight. It is both a conclusion and a beginning - an end to Jesus’ earthly ministry and the start of the Church’s mission in the world.

A Glorious Day

The account of the Ascension is found in the Book of Acts (1: 6–11). There, Jesus gathers his disciples, promises them the gift of the Holy Spirit, and commissions them to be his witnesses “to the ends of the earth.” Then, as they watch, he is taken up before their eyes. The image is powerful: Christ, exalted and enthroned, returning to the Father, yet not abandoning us. Rather, he promises his continued presence through the Holy Spirit.

Ascension Day reminds us of the glory of Christ and the hope of heaven. It lifts our eyes beyond the challenges of everyday life and invites us to remember that our faith is rooted in a risen, reigning Saviour. It also sets the tone for the days that follow - ten days of prayerful waiting for Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit. In many churches, this period is marked by the Thy Kingdom Come initiative, a time of intentional prayer for people to come to know Jesus.

Wherever you are in your journey of faith, Ascension Day offers a moment to lift your heart and voice in praise, remembering that Christ reigns in glory and walks with us still.
