FUNERALS & THANKGIVING

We offer compassionate support during bereavement, providing comfort, prayer, and a caring community to walk alongside you in your time of loss

When a loved one passes away, families and friends gather to honour their life and say goodbye.

While both funeral services and thanksgiving services fulfil this purpose, they differ in tone, focus, and timing. Understanding these distinctions can help you decide which approach better reflects your loved one’s wishes and legacy.

A Funeral Service

A funeral is a solemn and structured ceremony held shortly after death, often before the burial or cremation. It typically includes elements such as:

  • A focus on mourning: Funerals provide a space for grief and reflection, acknowledging the loss and the pain it brings.

  • Traditional rites: In many Christian traditions, the service includes prayers, hymns, scripture readings, and a sermon or eulogy.

  • Closure: With the presence of the deceased’s body or ashes, the service often concludes with a committal, marking the transition from life to rest.

  • Community support: Funerals allow loved ones to come together to mourn and support one another in their shared loss.

A funeral provides a structured way to grieve and honour the person’s life within a framework of faith and hope, often emphasising themes of resurrection and eternal life.

A Thanksgiving Service

A thanksgiving service, by contrast, focuses on celebrating the life of the deceased. It is often held independently of the burial or cremation and may occur weeks or months after the passing. Key features include:

  • A focus on celebration: While grief is acknowledged, the tone is more uplifting, emphasising gratitude for the life lived and the positive impact the person had on others.

  • Flexibility: Thanksgiving services can be more personalised, incorporating music, tributes, photos, or stories that reflect the individual’s unique character.

  • A broader gathering: Since they are not tied to the immediate days after death, thanksgiving services may allow for a larger gathering of family and friends who couldn’t attend the funeral.

The service is often seen as a way to honor the memory of the deceased in a joyful, faith-filled atmosphere, celebrating their contributions and the love they shared.

How we support you

In both settings, we will support you by providing spiritual guidance and pastoral care. Whether through solemn prayer during a funeral or joyful reflection during a thanksgiving service, offering hope in God’s promise of eternal life.

By understanding these options, you can honour your loved one in a way that feels right for your family and faith.

Parish Churchyard Regulations

Churchyard regulations help ensure that our churchyards remain places of peace, dignity, and respect for all who visit and are laid to rest there. They provide guidance on matters such as headstone design, inscriptions, and the placement of flowers or other items. These regulations are in place to protect the character of the churchyards and to support fair and sensitive management for the whole community. It’s important that anyone considering a memorial or tribute is aware of these rules before making arrangements. You can read the full regulations here.
